Managing exam stress: A new resource for RMOs

Managing exam stress: A new resource for RMOs

Balancing exam preparation with the demands of clinical work can be challenging. Between long shifts, on-call commitments and busy rosters, finding the time and energy to study while looking after your wellbeing isn't always easy.

NZMII has collaborated with Clearhead to develop Managing Exam Stress, a new quick-reference factsheet designed to support Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) through the challenges of preparing for exams.

The four-page resource explores eight common pitfalls that can arise during exam preparation, including perfectionist thinking, procrastination, ineffective study habits and burnout.

Each challenge is paired with practical tools and techniques tailored to the realities of working in a clinical environment.

The factsheet also includes strategies for reframing unhelpful thoughts, a 60-second reset for moments of heightened stress, and a daily checklist to help maintain healthy routines throughout exam preparation.

Whether you're approaching your next exam or planning your study schedule, the guide offers practical ways to manage pressure, study effectively and prioritise your wellbeing.

Support when you need it

If stress is becoming unmanageable, reach out early to a colleague, supervisor, GP or Clearhead. Asking for support is a sign of good clinical judgement, not a failing.

Remember, you get access to confidential and expert psychological  support with NZMII,
up to six sessions per year with Clearhead.
